Merry merry

Hi all — I know I’ve been disgustingly quiet lately, but things have just been too hectic. My birthday, a death in the family and various other things have all conspired to keep me blogless for a while.

Never fear, things will hopefully get better early in the new year. I’m on holiday from tomorrow until next year and wont be posting until then.

Keep well all and Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all those who celebrate such things. Enjoy!

Cheers

Top class rant!

Uncategorised Comments Off

I’m lazy today and besides I’ve found something much more interesting than what I was planning to write anyway! So, for your reading pleasure, may I present a truly top class rant from my very own Ibis :)
This is crossposted from her Perfect Human blog, so my apologies if you’ve already read it :)
“Yankee Spirit” posted by Ibis
It’s not that I hate (or even dislike) Americans. I don’t. I hate their arrogance and superficial ignorant attitude.

Before I go any further, I’d just like to apologise to any Americans who do not conform to the standard Yankee charicature which has caused the rest of the world to form a negative impression of America in general. I mean no offence to you. To the rest of you, however, it’s about time you caught a wake-up. This post may offend you, but hey, Americans are all for Freedom of Speech, aren’t they? And i can assure you, I am not a terrorist out to get you, merely a civilian who has had enough and feels the need to voice their opinion.

Note: the following will contain the word “Americans” as a generalisation, intended to incorporate 90% of the population of the USA. For the other 10%, refer to the above paragraph.

How the rest of the world view Americans:
Americans are arrogant. They think the entire planet, looks up to America, strives to be like America, worships America. We don’t.

Americans live in a fantasy world where celebrity == god or goddess. Celebrities are people. Celebrities are not to be worshiped. Looping from the above paragraph: We do not worship your celebrities either.

Americans are blissfully ignorant. There is a world outside of the American Continent. There are no tigers or bears roaming the streets of South Africa. Nor, for that matter, are there lions or buffalo roaming the streets of South Africa. South Africa may be classified as a third world country, but trust me, we’re very civilised. So are many of the other African countries. Africa (specifically SOUTH AFRICA) does not equal dangerous jungle filled with uncivilised canibal tribes.

Americans, (and this applies to Germans too) please. Do you have any idea how ridiculous you look visiting South Africa in your safari clothes?

Americans are afraid of everything. Not every rustle of leaves, or suspicious-looking person, is a terrorist. The people in power have purposefully made you tremble in your boots, for no reason whatsoever. Do some researh and find out how many of the scares are for real.

Americans believe they are untouchable. This attitude is just FAR too arrogant. It may sound shocking and utterly horrible, but while the rest of the world grieved for those lives lost in 9/11, they were also relieved that someone had the guts to show the American nation that they are indeed, not untouchable.

What exactly is the “American Dream”, and how do you “live it”? Every time I hear that expression, it illustrates a completely different meaning. Is it starting out selling lemonade on the streets and then ending up with a multi-million dollar corporation? Is it being able to be who you want to be and having the freedom to express yourself? Is it all about being rich and famous and having a body filled with silicon and plastic?
And what is it, exactly, that makes it the American Dream? If someone in, let’s say Britain, lives that dream, is it also considered the American Dream? Or does that make it the British Dream? What if people from all over the world live that dream - is it still the American Dream? Shouldn’t it be called the Intenational Dream?

I just wish that Americans would wake up and realise that the world does not revolve around America. America is not the be all and end all. And you are not respected as much as you would like to think you are.
:) Now, I’ll just wait for the comments to stream in shall I? :)
Cheers

Iron my DNA

Uncategorised Comments Off

I did my ironing in front of the tv last night… doing ironing on your own sucks. Anyways, I was doing my ironing when a report aired about a new technology that allows you to find missing persons with some DNA and advanced satellite systems. It all sounds too good to be true and personally I cannot fathom how this could work. The few details and large claims all smack of hoax material… Here’s the news report

Ibis leaves the Airshow

Uncategorised 1 Comment »

Well, it’s already Tuesday, so I guess I’m overdue for a post at the moment.

This weekend was hot and sunny. Friday night was stay in and have a few drinks night, so Ibis and I went and bought something called po10c (potency). I’ll admit, we were lured by the garish bottle and trendy (if idiotic) spelling. The blurb on the bottle assured us it was perfect as a shooter or as a mixer, so we got a bottle of Sprite just in case it tasted horrid neat.

We got home and both had a shot… it tasted like bad medicine. Literally. So we both decided to mix it with Sprite for the rest of the evening, which turned out alright. I was later assured that “it gets better, the more you drink”. I think I’ll pass on that one.

Saturday morning we got up early to go to the airshow at ysterplaat. The static displays were interesting in a museum sort of way. I suppose if you’re “into” aviation it would probably hold more fascination. What were really came to see were the planes and helicopters flying. What a show! There were many great displays, although for me the fighter jets were the stars. The incredible noise and the awesome speed sent shivers down my spine and made me feel like a kid again, longing to be a fighter pilot. We spend most of the day staring at the sky and eating ice-creams before heading home.

Once home, we quickly realised that a trip to the pharmacy for some Deep Freeze would be a good idea. We had both neglected to use sunscreen and we were a rather embarrassing shade of crimson. With really bad sunburn, we decided to spend Sunday indoors watching movies - sacrilege with the awesome weather, but then when you’re that burned, being in the sun doesn’t appeal much.

Here’s a photo of Ibis and I at the airshow

and another of the dogs, Stoffel (dachshund) and Sophie (poodle).

Monday morning the light of my life (Ibis, you fools), left me to go home for the holidays :’(
Luckily she’ll be back for my birthday in about 10 days or so - W00T!! :)

My evenings are lonely now (and there’s not much on tv) so I’ve dedicated myself to finally clocking GTA Vice City. I’ve gotten close several times, but I never seem to collect all those packages or finish all the kill frenzies.

More news later
Cheers

Eat it Telkom

Uncategorised Comments Off

I was very happy this morning! I received a ruling on a complaint I made to the Advertising Standards Authority of SA and it was in my favour! Let me explain:

Telkom (SA’s monopoly telecoms company) has been flighting an ad on tv’s and in cinema’s here lately that depicts a 6yr old boy in Tanzania being saved by a Cape Town heart surgeon through the amazing power of ISDN technology. The ad asserts that Dr. Anton Louw saved Juma’s life by using Telkom’s ISDN to perform distance surgery on the boy from 3000 miles away.

Ibis and I saw this advert twice in two weeks at the cinema a while back and the second time we heard a couple in front of us whisper something to the effect of “wow, that’s amazing”. The advert presented itself as fact - something that I very highly doubted, so I did a bit of research with trusty ‘ol Google, read the ASA code of conduct and emailed Telkom to ask for more information on the ad. Telkom told me the ad was completely fictional, but it illustrated what might be possible. So I lodged a formal complaint with the ASA. They responded after a week or two that they had forwarded my complaint to Telkom for a response and that a hearing would be set up soon. Today I got the verdict, which was that Telkom could not substantiate the claims made in the advert and so must pull it immediately.

Of course Telkom can always appeal the decision, but I really don’t see how they have a leg to stand on when Tanzania doesn’t even have ISDN and the ad contains no disclaimer whatsoever that it depicts a fictional event.

Comments welcome!!
