Autopilot into mediocrity

Uncategorised 1 Comment »

Lately I haven’t really been putting much thought into my blog posts — there just seems to be so much to do lately and never enough time to do it in… so I thought I’d put aside a few minutes to write a real post.

I recently joined the UCT squash club as a social member and Ibis and I now play twice a week in a sincere effort to get some kinda fitness thang going on :)
Work has been going along fairly well. I’m not too stressed, but neither am I twiddling my thumbs… The theft of my car stereo system was a bummer, but these things happen I guess.

All in all life seems to be on autopilot at the moment. Generally speaking things seem to be going pretty well, although there are a few things that keep me on my toes. The problem is that it never seems to let up… I’ve always got something going on recently. I think I need a holiday… yes sure, scoff if you must, but I just feel like I need a couple of days to catch my breath and decide where I am at the moment and how I want my life to proceed. I’m scared that I’m going to wake up one day and realise that I’m 30 and I haven’t yet achieved any of the long term goals I set myself. I’ve seen it happen to way too many people and I don’t want that to happen to me.

Anyway, I’ve killed the google ads — they didn’t seem to be picking up on my content and if they were I obviously wasn’t talking about anything interesting enough to sell as the adverts were always for blogging tools. That and I only got 2 clicks the whole time they were up ($0.08).

Cheers

The Museum of Theft

Hello all!

What an eventful weekend Ibis and I had! Friday night was pretty standard for us and we didn’t really do much. Saturday we got up to see if we could get in a squash game, but unfortunately it was the ladies rankings, so all courts were fully booked for the whole day. Next we decided to take a walk through the Cape Town Gardens. We bought some peanuts and meandered through the gardens for a while, but didn’t see a single squirrel. I think there were too many people about. At any rate we ended up feeding the peanuts to the pigeons who were quite pushy about it all. They gathered about us in a great flock and several landed on our hands. One even landed on Ibis’s arm and started eating directly out of the packet.

After that we decided to check out the museum and grab some lunch at the same time. We saw that they had a show called “Saturn, Lord of the Rings” on at the planetarium and bought tickets since the show started in an hour which would give us time to eat. By the way, entrance to the museum is free on Saturday’s (not the planetarium though).

The little restaurant at the museum is excellent despite its appearance. They serve tasty, reasonably priced food and make quite good milkshakes too!! :)
The planetarium show was a bit of a disappointment to me, although probably because I didn’t really learn anything new. The museum itself was also a big disappointment. It is clearly under funded and in need of a few new exhibits and several of the display cases stood empty and the lights were off in many sections as well.

We got home and Ibis had a nap while I played a bit of The Sims before we started getting ready to go out for the evening. We were going to meet up with Plato, an old friend of mine who moved to Germany about 4 years ago. We got to the bar and had a great time, slowly getting drunk and reliving old times. Plato and I reminisced about the bad old days and had a good laugh.

When we got back to the car at about 1am, Ibis noticed her door was unlocked and was unsettled, because she always locks and double-checks her door. Worse still, the passenger door behind hers was also unlocked. I didn’t really think anything of it until I got in… A cluster of neatly clipped wires stared back at me where my MP3/CD player should have been. I flipped open the cubby hole to check if they got the face as well, already knowing what I would find… nothing. Worse yet, the house keys were also gone. I turned in my seat and looked back. Yup, they got the JVC 6×9’s too. I was slightly stunned, but quickly realised there was no reason to get excited. The thieves had come and gone, done no damage to the car and were clearly expert at their game. Ibis was severely rattled and was worried I would think that she’d forgotten to lock her door and thus blame her. I hugged her and let her know that I knew she’d locked her door - Citi Golf’s like mine have been on the roads so long that the car thieves can open them in seconds with the right equipment.
We drove to the police station and reported the incident before calling my folks (without house keys, we’d need a place to stay for the night).

The next morning after some killer breakfast from my Mom, we traipsed back to our place with various tools and prevailed on one of our neighbours to let us into the complex. Then we promptly hacksawed through one of the burglar bars (cheaper than calling a locksmith or drilling the lock out) and I crawled through and retrieved Ibis’s set of keys and opened up.

Although the thieves stole the house keys, there was nothing in the car that could have given them our address and the car itself is registered to my parents address. The place the break in occurred is also sufficiently far from our flat that we decided that changing all the locks was an unnecessary task.

Anyway, I’ve since received a case number, but I don’t hold out any hope of recovering my stuff. We’ve replaced the burglar bar we sawed through and I’m in the process of having a new set of keys cut… what a hassle!! :|
More later!
Cheers
