Logic 101

Uncategorised 7 Comments »

I just came across a neat quote by an ancient philosopher…

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”

–Epicurus (341 - 270 BC)

Another God related logical quandry is of course the age old “Can God make a rock so heavy that He cannot lift it?”

Feel free to comment, but no flaming please ;)

Spam Ahoy!

About a week ago I was a pretty happy blogger! I got my first set of comment spam. Yes, yes I know: Spam == BAD, but it’s like a badge of achievement ya know? My blog has been spidered and now I’m getting comment spam! w00t. Almost like a rite of passage ;)
Anyway, today was my second batch and I can honestly say the novelty has worn off. Deleting all those stupid comments is really annoying. So, I’ve put word verification on my comments now. This means that now, when you want to leave a comment, you’re going to have to type in the letters you see in an image - all this in an attempt to confound auto-spammers… *sigh*

Cheers for now!

I am not by nature a negative person. I am pretty cynical most of the time and you might think that it’s a contradiction to be a cynic with a positive attitude, but that’s what I am. See, I’m cynical about human nature, but positive about my own life… usually.

However occasionally one will have one of those days that starts out quite well, but then rapidly spirals into the day from hell. The cynicism overtakes you and you cannot help but believe that everything is futile and there’s really no point to anything. Today is one of those days. Don’t ask me why. Mostly I don’t know… I just hate days like this.

I think perhaps one of the triggers is the impending holiday. Like how the closer to home you get, the worse you need to pee until by the time you’re opening the bathroom door you’ve just about wet yourself. I think this is the same thing. I need a holiday and one’s just around the corner and thus my perceived need for a holiday is skyrocketing.

Snowy neighbours

Good morning all! Things are starting to get exciting now!

First off, let me tell you about our completely insane upstairs neighbours. It was Ibis that first alerted me to their strange behaviour and last night was the final confirmation I needed to pronounce them insane publically.

It was around 22:30 last night, just as the movie on etv was finishing (Ibis hates both Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts, so her sitting through it was quite an accomplishment ;)) when we heard a godawful noise above us. They were vacuuming their tiled floors. They seem to enjoy vacuuming. A lot. At night. Late. After the 20 minute vacuum they then proceeded to bath. Again. These people seem to bath about 4 times a day and vacuum at least twice a day. Clearly these people need pschological help.

Anyways, forgetting that for a minute, Ibis and I had an awesome weekend. Saturday involved a trip to Worcestor (for some family business) and on the way we saw snow on the mountains! To prove it, here are some photies:

I’ve actually uploaded quite a few new photo’s to my flickr account, so check ‘em out

Other than that we didn’t do too much except lounge around and discuss our upcoming trip overseas! YAY! We got our tickets and travel itinerary so we’re both starting to get really excited now! Only 26 days left ;)
One last linkage before I go (yes, it’s another New Scientist link). Scientists have devised moleculor motors capable of moving droplets uphill. Now I know that sounds pretty pansy assed at the moment, but read the article and think about some of the possible applications this could have in the future… awesome!

Cheers for now

Conspiracy Theory

Friday’s always seem to provoke a slightly more relaxed attitude at the office. And thus it came about this morning while I was grabbing my first mug of sludge (coffee) that the topic of 9/11 came up. After a bit of discussion the office consensus seems to be that 9/11 was a controlled demolition and that it was all planned and executed by the Bush administration so he could invade Iraq…

*takes tongue out of cheek*
